Revisiting "The Culture of the School and the Problem of Change."
Sarason, Seymour B.
Part 1 of this book reproduces the second edition of Seymour Sarason's work, "The Culture of the School and the Problem of Change," in which he described how change affects a school's culturally diverse environment, either through the implementation of new programs or as a result of federally imposed regulations. First published in 1971, the book challenged many major assumptions about institutional change and examined efforts to implement Public Law 94-142 (Education for All Handicapped Children) into public schools. The book argued that federal efforts to restructure education were generally a failure. Part 2 revisits the issues 25 years after the original publication. Dr. Sarason expresses concern that the reform arena is being manipulated by forces that are at best untroubled by and at worst intent on dismantling the public school system, and that the education system's defenders are not focusing on the real issues. Part 1 contains 151 references and part 2 contains 54 references. (LMI)
