Abstract:This proceedings document provides the texts of 18 presentations given at a 3-day conference in 1993 which focused on policies, materials, programs, and activities being implemented in Alabama to foster the successful transition of youth with disabilities to adult life. First, four individuals with learning disabilities (Travis Moore, Kim Witherington, Tracey Smith, and Mark Pope) recount their personal stories. Next, 11 papers address Alabama programs and services, followed by 3 additional papers on transition. The papers are: (1) "Cullman County's Transition Program" (Kaye Hilton et al.); (2) "Jefferson County's Pilot Program on Functional Assessment" (Beverly Lavender); (3) "Elmore County's Language Cookbook: A Functional Language Curriculumn for the Moderately- to Severely-Handicapped" (Sandra Diaz et al.); (4) "Tuscaloosa's Program Where Consumers and Families Speak Up" (Linda Hutt et al.); (5) "Birmingham's Student Transitional Education Program (S.T.E.P.)" (Nan Butler et al.); (6) "The University of Alabama's Project BOLD: Services for Students with Learning Disabilities" (Pat Friend); (7) "UAB's Program for Students with Learning Disabilities" (Betty West and Carolyn Toler); (8) "The University of Alabama's 'LD Bridges to Career Success Project'" (Jamie Satcher and Marcheta McGhee); (9) "Real-Time Captioning in an Educational Setting: A Pilot Project at Auburn University" (Kelly Haynes); (10) "Auburn University's Transition Course" (Clarence Brown); (11) "Auburn University's Teacher Preparation Program with an Emphasis at the Secondary Level" (Philip Browning and Caroline Dunn); (12) "Self-Determination: An Essential Ingredient in Transition" (Philip Browning); (13) "The Transition of Alabama's Emotionally Disturbed Youth" (Rebecca Curtis and Cheryll Glisson); and (14) "Transition: Implications for Rehabilitation Counselors" (Maura Elizabeth Parry). A list of conference participants and a cumulative index to the three conference proceedings published in 1992, 1993, and 1994 completes the document. (DB)
