Flexible Work Arrangements in ARL Libraries. SPEC Kit #180.
Zabel, Diane, Comp.; And Others
This report presents the results of a survey of Association of Research Libraries (ARL) members about the current climate and practices regarding flexible work arrangements. Data are reported on the availability of schedule flexibility, job exchange, part-time arrangements, and leaves, as well as information about faculty status, tenure, unionization/collective bargaining, and other factors that might exhibit a correlation to workplace flexibility. A copy of the questionnaire with a tally of the responses to individual questions is included as well as comments by respondents. The remainder of the kit consists of copies of 34 planning documents submitted by libraries responding to the survey. Topics covered include job sharing/job exchange, leaves, phased retirement, scheduling/flextime, and stopping the tenure clock. The ARL libraries represented are those of the University of Alberta, University of Arizona, Colorado State University, Dartmouth College, University of Delaware, University of Illinois, University of Iowa, Kent State University, University of New Mexico, State University of New York at Stonybrook, North Carolina State University, Ohio State University, Penn State University, Purdue University, Queen's University, University of Toronto, Tulane University, University of Waterloo, and York University. Also included are a glossary of flexible workplace terminology and a list of 30 suggested readings. (MES)
