The attitudes, expectations, and reactions of students taking a new multimedia Irish language course offered in 1982 by Ireland's Radio Telefis Eireann were surveyed. The course "Anois is Aris," is intended for adults who have never spoken Irish and is suitable for beginners as well as those who have studied Irish at school. The 20-week course includes a television program broadcast, a complementary radio program, and a course book. Of the 171 participants who completed a precourse questionnaire, 167 completed at least one journal questionnaire, which provides information on use of the learning package and learning outcomes. Information is provided on participants' background (age, sex, geographic origin and nationality, occupation, family life, leisure-time pursuits, and general education experience). The participants' language in the home, previous experience of learning Irish, and experience of learning languages other than Irish were also documented, along with the participants' intentions and expectations with regard to the course and their future use of Irish. With regard to the learning experience, information is presented on the following: (1) rates at which respondents used the different elements in the "Anois is Aris" package, (2) rates of private study, (3) week-by-week contact with and use of Irish other than during the course, (4) what respondents most enjoyed about different course units and other reactions to the course, (5) individual learning targets that caused difficulties, and (6) feedback from course dropouts.
