The Gift that Keeps Giving: Historically Black College and University-Educated Scholars and Their Mentoring at Predominately White Institutions
Reddick, Richard J.
Educational Foundations, v20 n1-2 p61-84 Win-Spr 2006
In this article, the author pursues to answer the query whether the impact and relevance of HBCUs has diminished over the past thirty years or not. He examines two research questions: (1) How do four African-American professors who self-identify as mentors at a highly-selective PWI describe and understand their formative experiences as they relate to their mentoring relationships with African-American undergraduate students?; and (2) How do four African-American professors who self-identify as mentors teaching at a highly selective PWI explain why they are committed to mentoring African-American undergraduate students? He also shares some personal experiences as a student in HBCU and outlines Critical Race Pedagogy (CRP) and Bainis conceptualization of outstanding college teachers and their treatment of their students. (Contains 3 tables and 9 notes.)
