Teacher Mobility: A Loss to South African Schools?
Waghid, Yusef
Perspectives in Education, v25 n2 p101-108 Jun 2007
In this conversation, triggered by display of a poster in the workplace, the author discusses migration of certified teachers away from South Africa, and cites a belief that a personal choice to seek employment in a foreign country seems inconsistent with the premise of communitarianism. Waghid argues that such teacher loss may exacerbate conditions in poorly resourced and dysfunctional schools, undermining teaching and learning, and threatening the long-term achievement of social justice in a county struggling to emerge from decades of apartheid.
