Tips for Young People. Talk and Work
Basic Skills Agency
Most young people look forward to the day when they can leave school or college behind and start work. If you are starting work for the first time, or even going on your first work placement, you are probably feeling pretty excited. There's a lot to learn, a lot of new people to meet--a chance to be more independent. But maybe you feel a bit worried too. Maybe you're thinking: what kind of impression will I make? Will I like the people? Will they like me? How will I know what to do? What can I do if it doesn't work out? Well, no matter what the job, you'll need to do a lot of talking and listening from Day 1. And being a confident speaker and listener will go a long way towards helping you succeed at work. You need to be a confident speaker and listener so that you can: (1) get on with others; (2) get the job done; and (3) deal with problems. Success at work is a lot to do with talking--and listening. This leaflet looks at what employers and young workers think about talking and listening and gives some tips on using your speaking and listening skills to get on at work.
