The Rise and Fall of a Yeast Community, An Environmental Investigation into the Dynamics of Population Growth.
Minnesota Environmental Sciences Foundation, Inc., Minneapolis.
In this unit students study populations by observing some of the activities that go on in one particular population. Specifically, yeast plants are examined and some of the effects which various environmental factors have on yeast plant populations are investigated. A population curve is developed showing how easily it is affected by the environment. Suggested activities involve the recognition of a yeast cell, finding evidence that it is living, determining its size, building instruments for measuring volume, dilution experiments, and step-by-step investigations of the growth and death of a yeast population. Graphing, using fractions, estimating numbers, and drawing conclusions by sampling are undertaken in the activities. Investigation cards provided at the back of the teaching guide for grades six through twelve give more suggestions for investigations designed to help students use the tools of exploration learned in the unit and enrich their understanding of population and growth curves. Descriptions of objectives and methods, lists of required simple materials, games, and graphs and charts combine to make this a complete unit for the teacher to use with a minimum of preparation.
