Technical College Instructors' Perceptions of the Impact of Online Readiness and of Student Support Services on Student Success in Online Courses
Dowd, Nathan
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Edgewood College
The purpose of this study is to determine how Wisconsin Technical College (WTCS) administrators and online instructors perceive the impact of online learner readiness and student support services to be on student success in online courses. The study used a modified three-round Delphi technique to determine to collect data. The results indicated that WTCS online instructors perceive that student access to IT help desk all hours of the day and days of the week is essential to promoting student success in online courses. The results also indicated that students would benefit from the development of a dedicated department of online learning, that student success in online courses depends on their readiness for online learning, and that self-direction was the most important student characteristic that promoted student success in an online course. The study makes four recommendations. First, in order to ensure optimal course success, students in online courses should be provided with IT help desk support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Second, students should be required to take an online readiness course prior to signing up for an online course or be given an online learning readiness assessment prior to registering for an online course. Third, support departments dedicated to online learning should prepare faculty to teach in online environments as well as prepare online readiness assessments and courses for students. Fourth, regular communication between the online student and instructor through technology, such as phones, emails, and voice over IP services, is essential for course success.
