This text provides information on learning disabilities in adults and offers practical ways to compensate. Chapters address: (1) definitions of learning disability; (2) etiology of learning disabilities; (3) our cognitive or thinking systems; (4) different assessment settings and some of the tests used to diagnose a learning disability; (5) dyslexia, some possible causes, and a clinical example of dyslexia in an adult; (6) the effects of learning disabilities on reading, writing, and mathematical problems; (7) attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and its relationships to learning disabilities; (8) psychosocial problems of individuals with learning disabilities, and some of the current theories and treatment approaches; (9) different types of instructional approaches used for individuals with learning disabilities; (10) information regarding transitional issues, accommodations, and program models for transition to college and employment; (11) vocational rehabilitation services that provide services to help individuals determine career goals and objectives; (12) case studies and interviews with adults who have learning disabilities that highlight the range of learning problems; and (13) current directions in the field. Appendices include a review of legislation and court cases pertaining to learning disabilities, a list of selected tests used for older adolescents and adults with learning disabilities, and a list of related resources.
