Current psychotherapy research emphasizes the interrelationships of process variables and outcomes to predict success. A methodology was developed for studying the variables of client problems, therapist qualities, and methods in relation to client satisfaction. To assess clients' experiences, expectations, and therapy perceptions, questionnaires covering problems, therapist characteristics, methods, satisfaction, and identifying information were administered to 151 mental health clinic clients at a large university. Responses were obtained at pre-treatment, post-third-therapy session and post-treatment points. Descriptive statistics, factor analyses, and correlations were computed. Although factor analyses identified reliable and interpretable dimensions of expectations and perceptions of therapy and therapist, only two categories of variables were related to satisfaction and posttest reports of work on intrapersonal, interpersonal, and stress-related physical problems. The total number of significant correlations with post-test satisfaction did not exceed that expected by change. (Author)
