Development of a Solar Related Vocational Training Curriculum. Final Report.
Charles, John F.
A project developed a solar-related vocational training curriculum for use in the general technical trades training curriculum. Forty-seven firms comprising Washington State's "solar industry" were surveyed to identify existing and emerging solar-related occupations and prerequisites for entry. Results indicated that solar technologies most likely to achieve the greatest market penetration were domestic hot water systems, swimming pool heaters, and passive/passive hybrid systems. Job requirements of entry level solar workers were a combination of skills from carpentry, sheet metal, plumbing, and pipefitting. A formal task analysis for four solar-related occupations (carpentry, sheet metal, electrician, and plumbing/pipefitting) as they pertain to four generic solar technologies focused on tasks involved in installation and maintenance of solar systems. A "Solar Mechanics Vocational Training Curriculum," consisting of course goals, course descriptions, prime and performance objectives, and a course outline, was prepared. Individuals entering the open entry, open exit program are assumed to possess entry-level skills in carpentry, plumbing and pipefitting, or electrical maintenance. (Appendixes, amounting to over one-half of the report, include a report describing solar technologies appropriate to the Puget Sound Region, solar occupations survey and results, literature review, tasks analysis, preliminary curriuclum, and manpower projection.)
