A Reflection on the Work of an Educational Psychologist in Providing Supervision for a Team of Community Based Support Workers, Supporting Families with Vulnerable Adolescents at Risk of Exclusion from School

The evolving role of the educational psychologist (EP) is discussed with an emphasis on the supervision provided for a team of support workers for vulnerable adolescents, working within a Local Service Team. This development is considered in the context of the Every Child Matters (DfES, 2004) agenda and the Farrell, Woods, Lewis, Rooney, Squire and O'Connor (2006) report on the functions and contribution of the EP. The article describes and reflects on some theoretical models and practice frameworks used in supervision and supporting the team in its practice and managing their own emotional health and well-being. The supervision process involved collaborative problem solving through case discussion and led to the development of a more common understanding of school based issues and of a shared language regarding complex family dynamics. Some of the strengths and advantages of working within multi agency teams are described.
