Frank H. Wood is both a pioneer and a first-generation leader, and his contributions continue to influence the field today. Dr. Wood participated in several "firsts." In the 1950s, he taught the first public school class in Minnesota for emotionally disturbed students, and he later served as the first coordinator of programs for students with emotional and behavioral disabilities (EBD) in Minneapolis. He was the first PhD graduate of the University of Minnesota to specialize in education of students with EBD. He then joined the university faculty, where he helped develop teacher preparation programs and eventually coordinated the university's Special Education Program. In 1961, he participated in meetings at the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) that led to formation of the Council for Children With Behavioral Disorders, which he later served as president and as editor of the journal "Behavioral Disorders." He also served as president of Trainers of Teachers for Children With Behavioral Disorders and on sat the CEC Board of Governors. Among Dr. Wood's notable contributions was directing the Advanced Training Institutes in Severe Emotional Disturbance in the 1970s, where he brought together leading researchers, practitioners, and innovators from across the country to share ideas, approaches, and research about education and treatment.
