Every Woman's Right to Learn
Ward, Jane; Turner, Cheryl; Watts, Jane; Eldred, Jan
Adults Learning, v22 n6 p12-13 Feb 2011
As people celebrate the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day this year, NIACE has organised an event, "Every woman's right to learn," that will offer an opportunity for educators and learners to celebrate women's progress and achievements in and through learning, to find one's hopes and aspirations for the future and work collaboratively to draft a manifesto for women's learning to help achieve them. The first International Women's Day in 1911 was marked by rallies campaigning for women's rights to work, to education, to hold public office and to end discrimination. International Women's Day marks its 100th anniversary on 8 March honouring the progress and achievements of women who have taken action for their rights: to vote, to education, at work, to healthcare, to define their lives. The author stresses that it is an opportunity to reflect not only on what women have achieved through education but to look to the future and the challenges that still face women campaigning for full equality.
