Five articles and two review essays are presented on the history of American higher education between the Civil War and World War II. "Revisiting Hutchins" and "The Higher Learning in America" (Benjamin McArthur) discusses Robert Maynard Hutchins' 1936 publication which promoted development of liberal arts curricula. "The Graduate Education of a Black Scholar: Horace Mann Bond and the University of Chicago" (Wayne Urban) looks at Bond's choice of a field of study, influential faculty members, and Chicago philanthropic connections. "Preserving the Pedestal: Restrictions on Social Life at Southern Colleges for Women, 1920-1940" (Amy Thompson McCandless) comments on southern colleges' promotion of traditional views of womanhood and their reinforcement of Southern paternalism. "The Founding and Early Years of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America" (Robert Fierstien) examines the Seminary's influence in the areas of Jewish education, social work, and Zionism and its development of university-trained, traditional rabbis. "Against the Odds: Mother Irene Gill and the Founding of the College of New Rochelle" (Tracy Mitrano) discusses Gill's influence on the development of this New York school. "Knowledge and Power: American Higher Education in the Twentieth Century: A Review Essay" (Robert Church) reviews three 1986 publications. "Social Science and the Social Functions of Ideas: A Review Essay" (Thomas Popkewitz) examines five 1984-1986 books which explore the professionalization of knowledge and the role of the intellectual in contemporary industrial societies.
