Understanding Vietnamese Refugee Women's Identity Development from a Sociopolitical and Historical Perspective
Phan, Loan T.; Rivera, Edil Torres; Roberts-Wilbur, Janice
Journal of Counseling & Development, v83 n3 p305 Sum 2005
This article discusses the Vietnamese refugee women's identity development. As the U.S. population diversifies, it behooves all professional counselors to increase their knowledge and understanding of multicultural populations. One population that has received little attention has been Vietnamese refugee women. The authors discuss Women's Identity Development models and Asian American Ethnic Identity Development models. They present a historical overview of early Vietnamese culture as well as Chinese, French, and U.S. influences. They also present a case example that describes a Vietnamese refugee woman's identity issues and discusses particular topics counselors should consider when working with Vietnamese refugee women who live in the U.S.
