In the spring of 2007, the Organization of American Historians (the nation's premier body of professional historians, teachers, and public advocates of U.S. history) asked the author to take a look at what had changed in the profession with regard to the history of women and gender over the 100-year life span of the group. She accepted because she was curious. The author wanted to see whether she and her generation of historians of women had made a difference. She wanted to know what had happened to American history in the 30 years they had been focusing on women as active agents in the historical process. What she discovered was an unexpected tension between women and gender.
