Gotto, George S.; Beauchamp, Donna; Simpson, Mary-Margaret
Exceptional Parent, v37 n8 p52-53 Aug 2007
In this article, the authors describe Early Childhood Family Support Community of Practice (CoP), which was launched and facilitated by the Beach Center on Disability at the University of Kansas. A CoP is a group of people who share concerns or passions about a topic and who regularly interact based on their shared interests. The goal of Early Childhood Family Support CoP is to synthesize the best available research, family wisdom, and professional wisdom to foster wisdom-based action for the ultimate benefit of families and practitioners. It intends to accomplish this goal through candid online discussions, characterized by trust, respect, positive communication, competence, and equality. The theme of the Early Childhood Family Support CoP is wisdom-based action. Wisdom-based action means considering, integrating, and acting upon the best available research, family wisdom, and professional wisdom within the context of one's own child, family, and community.
