An approach to teaching the subjunctive in the foreign language classroom is presented here. Based primarily on the work of the linguist William Bull, the numerous and vague "rules" are reduced to two essential principles that determine subjunctive use. The materials consist of a sixteen-page teaching guide, an outline for student use, and a set of coordinated exercises that explain the principles that govern the use of the subjunctive. The approach is designed for use with any first-year Spanish text that divides the subjunctive presentation into an analysis of the noun clause, the adjectival clause and the adverbial clause. Many drills and exercises from other textbooks may be used with it. Since first-year texts present subjunctive concepts alonq with the forms for the present subjunctive before introducing the imperfect, this approach uses the present tense in all examples and exercises. By translating or "backshifting" the main verbs into the past, the exercises are easily adaptable for teaching the past subjunctive as well. (Author/AMH)
