The Comprehensive System for the Rorschach is a major work in psychology that continues to evolve. The Basic Foundations text (Exner, 1974, 1986, 1993, 2003) is now in its fourth edition. The Exner system and the Rorschach have been the subjects of extensive research and publications, and the Exner system has its share of proponents and critics. Although other applied psychologists may use the Rorschach, surveys of the test usage of school-housed psychologists (Hutton, Dubes, &Muir, 1992; Kennedy, Faust,Willis, & Piotrowski, 1994) indicate that there is limited interest and use. Critics have focused on the psychometric limitations of the Comprehensive System; these limitations make the test less defensible for school psychologists. The fourth edition of Exner's work is more user friendly than the previous edition. Although much material remains from earlier editions, there is a reorganization, a new chapter, new normative data (Exner, 2002), and most important for practitioners, an improved explanation of how to proceed with test interpretation. Of note is the reorganization of the chapters according to the clusters that compose the structural summary, the manner in which aggregated data are organized for interpretation. This article provides a review of the fourth edition of the Comprehensive System for the Rorschach and its utility for highly applied practitioners such as school psychologists.
