This kit introduces the basic concepts of habitat through challenging and engaging interdisciplinary, hands-on activities. The material is designed for K-8 educators working in traditional and non- traditional classrooms with the goals of increasing awareness of the ways habitats work and why they are important. This kit consists of four components: (1) Kit Tips Module--general tips on creating an inclusive setting to make activities accessible to all students and to facilitate learning in outdoor settings such as camps, weekend programs, museums, and zoos; (2) Background Module--provides content and background information to prepare educators to guide their audiences through explorations of the natural world; (3) Activity Module--contains 15 activities designed to spark learner interest and motivate learning through hands-on explorations and discusses subject areas explored, skills developed, approximate time the activity will take, materials needed, learning objectives, tips on preparing, procedures for doing the activity, and extension opportunities; and (4) Schoolyard Habitats Guide Module--outlines how the audience can take action to help wildlife by designing, creating, and maintaining a National Wildlife Federation (NWF) certified Schoolyard Habitats site.
