Teaching at Logan International Airport
Schmidt, Steffen
Journal of Political Science Education, v1 n1 p143-149 Feb 2005
Although Terminal C at Logan airport does not look like a classroom, for about fifty minutes on this author's way back from Boston it was for him. Like many public spaces, Logan now has a very robust Wi-Fi wireless network and this enabled him to take advantage of a departure delay to "teach" his class. In 1970 when the author started teaching, the physical brick and mortar classroom, analog (tangible) paper products, and students "attending" the physical classroom by actually walking in, sitting down, and answering "here" to roll call, was the only way to teach. The advantages of web-managed classes such as the author's Coastal Politics and Policy Class, however, are now clearly recognized as both a significant opportunity and a threat to education. The author believes that it is now clear that people can design, develop, and deliver very high quality and innovative classes asynchronously on the web. He also believes that people are answering the question of quality differences between technology driven classes and traditional classes. In this article, the author shares a few observations on teaching at a distance which have benefitted from his own 34 years of evolving experience with relentlessly driving new technology both at Iowa State University and also as a professor of Coastal Zone Management at Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida), a pioneer in distance education.
