Inner City, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Polaroid Corporation, located in the Roxbury section of Boston. Without the use of public funding, Polaroid created this job training program 17 years ago to provide Boston's unemployed residents with entry into meaningful employment. Training occurs within the framework of an actual manufacturing environment so that trainees can gain an understanding of the real work world; trainees are also provided a variety of supportive services, such as educational programs and career and personal counseling. Since 1968, more than 1,500 Inner City graduates have been placed in permanent jobs. The latest followup survey was conducted in 1984. Data gathered from employer and graduate surveys found that 107 (58.5 percent) of the 183 individuals in the study group were still employed with their original companies at the time of the survey, while 76 (41.5 percent) were no longer working at their placement companies. Job titles for more than half the workers who were still with their original employers had been changed to other job titles for promotion (56 percent), lateral transfer (24 percent), reclassification (13 percent) or reorganization (7 percent). Employers rated the performance level of 96 persons who were still employed: 90 percent of them performed at an average or above average level. Of those who had left their placements, 43 percent were terminated, 39 percent resigned, and 18 percent were laid off. Absenteeism was found to be the dominant reason for termination. In general, those who were still on the job were older than those who had been terminated or who had resigned. The study recommended greater followup contact between Inner City and graduates and employers in order to foster more job success. (KC)
