For 4 years, from 1978 to 1979, questionnaires were sent to elementary and secondary school teachers in New Castle County, Delaware, to determine their teachers' attitudes concerning race, school desegregation, school quality, and educational practices before and after school desegregation. Differences in attitudes by teachers' age, sex, race, and racial composition of neighborhood of residence were also examined. The research found that: (1) in 1978 and 1979, racial attitudes were positive and attitudes toward desegregation were neutral; (2) in 1980 and 1981, teachers demonstrated the most positive attitudes toward the importance of education and school quality and the least positive attitudes toward desegregation; (3) attitudes concerning race and desegregation tended to be more positive among blacks, older teachers, and those who lived in integrated neighborhoods, and least positive among whites; (4) females were more likely to use minority teaching materials; and (5) males tended to have more favorable attitudes toward the availability of workshops on multicultural teaching.
