Playground Play: Educational and Inclusive
Moore, Lisa
Exceptional Parent, v41 n11 p22-24 Nov 2011
It is easy to understand that fun is one of the key ingredients to any playground activity. But what one may not realize is that play systems--including slides, tunnels, activity panels, and more--encourage a lot more than just fun: there is learning at work in playground play, as well as the opportunity to include children of all abilities in this social pastime. Even though kids may not realize it at the time, they are learning a lot about themselves, about life, and about how to get along with others when they play together outside. This article focuses on the value of playground play, describes what inclusive options exist for a child (even if he or she uses a wheelchair), and shares the educational benefits of playground play for children of all ability levels.
