A Pilot Study of Workshop-Based Instruction Via the Web
Liu, Eric Zhi-Feng
International Journal of Instructional Media, v31 n4 p401 Fall 2004
Industry and academia often hold workshops to promote products or disseminate technical information. This study defined workshop-based instruction (WIW) that coordinates student learning in a manner similar to researchers and scientists attending a workshop. WIW aims to enhance collaborative design through presentation, discussion, assessment and knowledge construction. Participants in this study were twenty four graduate students from the Graduate School of Computer and Information Science of a research-oriented university, who were enrolled in a course integration of web system and database. Owing to the limited number of people (groups), restricted to nine groups and 24 people, experimental research methods could not be used to empirically confirm the effectiveness of WIW. Therefore, qualitative analysis was performed to select the best webpage reports, show the effectiveness of WIW and explain their advantages. This study has demonstrated that when the WIW method is applied to a computer and information science course at graduate level, where the students are capable and highly motivated, the overall performance of students was excellent.
