Assessing the Relationship of Knowledge Management Effectiveness and Assessment Quality Improvement
Ringhand, Darlene Gail
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
Administrators at post-secondary institutions have found that national or regional accreditation is necessary to remain competitive in the higher education market with evidence of assessment considered a positive measure for accreditation. This quantitative study examined the correlation between the ranked levels of knowledge management within institutions and the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) assessment ratings as assigned by independent AQIP system-portfolio reviewers as a measure of accreditation. A review of literature identified the following factors that define knowledge management: identifying, collecting, and storing information that could be shared, analyzed, and evaluated. Data were gathered from AQIP-participating institution websites throughout the Midwest region of the United States (N = 52). Levels of knowledge management were identified and ranked using an ordinal scale of one to five. Pearson's correlation test was used as a non-parametric measure of association between knowledge management and assessment rankings. When evaluated individually, all five knowledge management factors had no relationship with the scores given by AQIP reviewers during the system appraisal process. The findings of all five knowledge management components were significant and revealed that institutions that used some form of knowledge management system did not receive higher scores from AQIP reviewers than those institutions that did not use a knowledge management system indicating the use of a knowledge management system did not benefit an institution by facilitating better assessment rankings. Future studies should include the institution size, geographic location, and institution to determine if these institutional factors yield results that could indicate a relationship between knowledge management and assessment.
