Expanding Children's Geographic World. Grade 1 Model Lesson for Standard 2. California History-Social Science Course Models.
Curtis, Mary Clair; Roth, Patsy; Porter, Priscilla
To complete Standard 2 of the California History-Social Science Framework, first-grade students must learn to use and construct maps and consider how location, weather, and physical environments affect the way people live. Students develop basic geographic skills by focusing first on their school and then on their neighborhood. The 6-year-old builds a sense of place through concrete, representative, and imaginary experiences. In kindergarten, the teacher models how to make different types of maps; whereas in first grade, students construct their own maps. Different kinds of maps are studied, and students learn to read the maps. They also learn that maps show things from above, where things are located, and the relationships among different places. This lesson plan requires 9 weeks to complete. The lesson plan furnishes background information, provides focus questions, offers literacy links (activities for reading, writing, speaking, and listening), lists materials needed for the lesson, and considers the topic in detail: "Beginning the Topic"; "Developing the Topic"; and "Culminating the Topic." It suggests assessment methods and presents extended and correlated activities. (Contains a list of 46 print resources and 2 visual resources for the sample topic.) (BT)
