It Isn't about the Building

Teaching Pre K-8, v36 n5 p42-45 Feb 2006
This article describes the ANSER Public Charter School in Boise, Idaho, where character education is considered a critical educational element, and both teachers and students are expected to adopt the core values of respect, integrity, courage, compassion, discipline, and responsibility. The ANSER school was founded by a group of parents, public school educators, and Boise State University faculty, who selected "Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound" as the educational cornerstone of the new public charter school. In Expeditionary Learning schools, students spend most of their day engaged in "learning expeditions," which are hands-on, three- to seven-month-long studies of a single topic, such as water quality, the civil rights movement, or the scientific revolution.
