This article describes a lesson on bats developed for kindergartners, which uses models of bats to teach about their physiology, diet, and habitat. The lesson uses craft sticks, wax paper, and colored construction paper that kindergarten teachers can use to help their students compare the features of 4 different kinds of bats. The use of online field guides for species identification is discussed, as well as students' drawings, group work, and engagement with the lesson. The lesson is aligned with "A Framework for Science Education's Core Idea LS2: Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics," which states that children should learn by the end of second grade that animals depend on their surroundings for survival, including finding sources of food, water, and shelter (NRC 2012). In addition, this lesson on bats was used to emphasize the scientific process skills of observation and classification, skills with which many young students have limited experiences.
