A Michigan Faculty Group Plays Role of Watchdog
Gose, Ben
Chronicle of Higher Education, v55 n5 pB5 Sep 2008
New administrative offices for diversity are popping up at universities around the country, and one can usually count on them to cast minority-recruiting efforts in a favorable light. There is still, however, a role for the old-school rabble-rousers, as a new report from a faculty committee at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor makes clear. In its report, the committee made clear that the promise of the 20-year-old Michigan Mandate has not been upheld. One of the primary goals of the mandate was to increase the representation of minority professors on the campus so that by the year 2000 it would correspond more closely to the proportion of minority residents in the state and the nation. The committee's 2008 report says that in the 14 years since it last issued a comprehensive report, the proportion of minority faculty members at Michigan had grown, but that Asian professors accounted for the vast majority of the growth. Michigan is widely admired for its aggressive and successful efforts to diversify its faculty during the first decade of the Michigan Mandate, and the university's senior vice provost for academic affairs, Lester P. Monts, is highly regarded among diversity officers. Although data presented by both the university and the faculty committee illustrate that Michigan's early successes have not been repeated in the past decade.
