This document contains the 11 publications constituting the first stage of the Voyager program, which is a four-stage program that utilizes contemporary content and instructional approaches to teach the reading, writing, critical thinking, and communication skills that adults need in today's world and to take adult learners from the beginning stages of reading through the ninth-grade level. The Voyager program combines contemporary content and instructional approaches with traditional instructional practices to help adult learners develop reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking skills through theme-based lessons that include opportunities for students to work independently and collaboratively in a variety of settings. The publications included in Stage 1 are targeted toward beginning readers and emphasize short reading selections containing common words; phonics instruction; and writing, speaking, and listening activities to teach basic skills and build students' confidence. The specific Voyager components included in this document are as follows: (1) a teacher's resource guide; (2) a foundation book that includes units on consonants, short vowels, and blends; (3) a Level 1 book featuring units on hopes and dreams, everyday heroes, thrilling moments, and friendship; (4) foundation and Level 1 workbooks; (5)foundation and Level 1 vocabulary workbooks; (6) puzzles for use with the foundation book and Level 1 book; and (7) a student booklet and teacher scoring guide for a tool for student placement.
