High-performing boards operating at a distinguishable level of excellence, all exhibit a culture of cohesiveness. And a compelling codicil is that these boards did not deliberately set out to become cohesive and perhaps do not even know they are cohesive. This article examines the value of cohesion to university governing boards, explicitly connecting the work of trusteeship to the institution's mission and making all trustees genuinely feel that their time and energy make a difference in influencing their institution's strategic direction. Trustees are volunteers and board cohesion converts passive volunteering, which can be a hobby or an occasional distraction from the rest of a trustee's life, into a passionate dedication that places the college or university trusteeship at the center of the individual's allocations of time, energy, and personal resources. This article describes best practices in successfully building a board's culture of cohesion.
