Volunteering is a common activity amongst adults without disability, resulting in benefits for individuals, organisations, and societies at large. In an attempt to increase community participation, people with lifelong disability who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems (e.g., speech generating devices or communication boards) are often encouraged to volunteer in order to gain work experience, to develop their social networks, and to play an active role in their communities. Indeed, volunteer coordinators from not-for-profit organisations have agreed that the people with disability with whom they worked have had valuable life skills and experience to offer as volunteers. However, the coordinators noted that many of the volunteers had difficulties with communication that impacted on their ability to volunteer successfully. In this paper, the authors discuss the barriers to successful volunteering for people who use AAC and suggest the need for research to explore the experiences of volunteers who use AAC in order to ensure that people who use AAC have equal access to volunteering opportunities.
