Educators need to help kids help others so that they can help themselves. Volunteering does not involve competition or grades. This is one area where students don't have to worry about measuring up to the expectations of parents, teachers, and coaches. Students participate in charitable work to add another line to a college transcript or job application. But that fact does not diminish the potential impact of volunteering. Helping others forces students to look outside of their egocentric box and toward the needs of others. In this article, the author discusses how to get students to become junior philanthropists.
