Predicting the Timing and Location of the next Hawaiian Volcano
Russo, Joseph; Mattox, Stephen; Kildau, Nicole
Science Scope, v33 n5 p26-32 Jan 2010
The wealth of geologic data on Hawaiian volcanoes makes them ideal for study by middle school students. In this paper the authors use existing data on the age and location of Hawaiian volcanoes to predict the location of the next Hawaiian volcano and when it will begin to grow on the floor of the Pacific Ocean. An inquiry-based lesson is also included in which students use their own calculations to predict when the next volcano on the Kea trend should appear. (Contains 5 figures.)
