Mississippi Substance Abuse Prevention Curriculum.
Mississippi State Dept. of Education, Jackson. Bureau of School Improvement.
This document presents the Substance Abuse Prevention Curriculum developed for use in Mississippi elementary and secondary schools. The curriculum uses a developmental approach to substance abuse prevention which emphasizes helping students gain information needed to make sound decisions about drug use. Incorporated into the curriculum are all learning objectives from the Comprehensive Health Curriculum that pertain to positive mental health in general and to substances specifically. Curriculum activities are provided separately for use in kindergarten through grade eight. Activities for grades 9 through 12 are categorized into six areas: driver education, English/literature, health, mathematics, science, and social studies. For each activity page there is an activity number, an activity goal, objective, learning component, vocabulary, academic focus, and a list of all materials needed to teach the activity. Handouts and visual aids are included following each activity. Appendices include a 100-page teacher's guide to drug information; an 11-page glossary; lists of educational resources; lists of treatment resources; Mississippi state laws; a videotape script and outline; and instructions for adapting the curriculum activities for use with special students, including the mentally retarded, learning disabled, visually impaired, and gifted.
