Vision is the dominant sense, and the eyes are connected with almost every other part of the brain. If the vision system is poorly developed, children trying to learn suffer. Without good up close vision, students are handicapped even if no one knows or suspects it--they may not even know it themselves. Students do not know that the way they see is not the way everyone sees. If they cannot do the things others can, they never blame their eyes. They think they are dumb and lose their self-esteem. Adults accuse them of not trying. "What does "trying" mean?" they wonder. Some even try harder and harder, but the effort takes so much energy that there is very little left over for remembering, analyzing, responding creatively, questioning intelligently, and so on. It takes them too long to finish in-school assignments and tests and hours to slog through homework. With intervention and treatment, those students can share the joy of learning that their peers experience.
