A Caribbean Education Strategy.
Jules, Didacus; Miller, Errol; Armstrong, L. Ancilla
The 20 member countries of the Caribbean Group for Cooperation and Development (CGCED) share with the rest of the world the common goals of reforming their education systems to equip Caribbean people for productivity, wealth creation, and social and personal development, and have participated in several regional and global initiatives. This education strategy report provides the framework for educational reform, necessary to address the demands of economic and social transformation in the Caribbean. The report comes in response to a request by CGCED for assistance in preparing a Caribbean Development Strategy to the year 2020 (Vision 2020), in which improving the education system is recognized as being fundamental. The report contains explanatory material, including abbreviations and acronyms, a list of figures, boxes, tables, and maps, and an executive summary. It is divided into four parts: (1) "Introduction" (which includes background, assumptions, key objectives, and limitations); (2) "Achievements, Challenges and Opportunities"; (3) "The Way Forward"; and (4) "External Financing of Education in the Caribbean." It concludes with an epilogue, a 22-item selected bibliography, and an extensive statistical annex. (BT)
