Harnessing the Power of SharePoint for Library Applications
Ennis, Lisa A.; Tims, Randy S.
Computers in Libraries, v30 n5 p6-12 Jun 2010
Back in 2008, the authors were looking for a tool that would replace the library's Outlook folders and much of what the library had stored on shared network drives. So they were mainly looking for something that would hold their documents, allow them to better organize those documents, offer an easy way to search for those documents, and be easy to access when off campus. As luck would have it, they got an invitation from the University of Alabama-Birmingham Information Technology (UAB IT). From this meeting they got three key things: SharePoint would integrate nicely with other Microsoft products including the Office suite; it would allow for a single sign-on for whatever they decided to use it, with no need for the virtual private network client or running a mapping script; and it would cost the library nothing but time because the university already had all the appropriate licenses. In this article, the authors focus on three real-life examples of how they've applied SharePoint in their library: Educational Sessions, ILLiad, and Virtual Reference. (Contains 5 figures.)
