Montreal Youth Use Their Voice to Transform Their Lives and Prevent Violence in Their Communities: A Discussion of the Leave Out Violence Program
Lekes, Natasha
New Directions for Youth Development, n116 p127-139 Win 2007
This article describes the Leave Out Violence (LOVE) program, which was founded in 1993 by Twinkle Rudberg many years after her husband's murder by a fourteen-year-old mugger in downtown Montreal. Realizing that the young person responsible for taking her husband's life was also a victim of violence, Rudberg was inspired to create a violence prevention program that could break the cycle of violence affecting the lives of so many young people. In 1993, she united with a journalist and a photographer to form a program that uses writing and photography to elicit youth voice. The first LOVE program began in Montreal in 1995 with fifteen youth. Known by its acronym, LOVE, the program has grown to five cities, with over two hundred youth leaders who reach forty thousand people each year. Through a photojournalism program and leadership training, participants learn skills to eliminate the violence in their lives and become advocates for violence prevention in their communities. In the same manner that Rudberg took a tragic event in her life and turned it into positive social action, the youth participating in the LOVE program take the violence that they have experienced and transform it into violence prevention.
