Introducing a High Bounce Ball Unit
Bernardo, Pat
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v17 n6 p25-26 Jul-Aug 2004
Those growing up in the 1950s, 60s or 70s are familiar with how physically active children were before computers and video games were introduced. Each neighborhood had its own version of the various games that were played. Many of these games involved a pink rubber ball called a Spaldeen. They were everywhere and almost everyone had one. These rubber balls are now being introduced to a new generation as a high bounce ball. High bounce ball games are a fun way to end the school year. The games and classroom instruction help students understand how activities and games vary from era to era. A critical look at current levels of activity, diseases on the rise as a result of sedentary life styles, and possible solutions can foster healthier lifestyles. This article describes how the author introduced students to the ball unit and provides tips for physical educators on how to make this unit successful in their programs.
