Reach for Reference. Britannica Online School Edition: Will You Allow Students to Use It?
Safford, Barbara Ripp
School Library Media Activities Monthly, v21 n5 p29-30 Jan 2005
This article describes Brittanica's Web-based K-12 resource, "Britannica Online Student Edition." This reference contains three encyclopedia databases: "Britannica" for teachers and older students, the "Student Britannica," and the "Elementary Brittanica." These are supplemented with videos and other media, a spotlight feature, a world atlas, and timelines that also serve as chronological browsers. In addition to the timeline browse, there is a regular search box, an index search, a hierarchical subject browse, and an alphabetical browse. A new series of interfaces allows a school to choose its own default screen for its users. The "Britannica Online School Edition" database is a tool to use to teach every information skill, to encourage reading practice, to teach visual literacy, to do group projects, and to meet content standards in every subject. It is also a great tool for teachers planning units of all sorts. In addition, the Britannica part of the database provides teachers with in-depth information to enhance everyday teaching. A Spanish language encyclopedia is also available.
