Learning and Teaching Initiative Grants: 2012-2013. A Review

The "Learning and Teaching Initiative Grants" scheme has funded about 120 projects with an "eLearning" focus during the past three years. Project leaders from twenty-nine completed 2012/2013 projects were interviewed with an aim of ascertaining innovative ideas that were successful, and unsuccessful, and exploring ways in which ideas could be disseminated and future funding allocated. Eight themes emerged from these interviews: flipped classrooms; use of video; feedback and formative assessment; application development; regular use of the LMS; advanced use of the LMS; simulations; and inquiry-based learning. There was strong enthusiasm among project leaders for the work they were doing to enhance student learning. This was often in the face of minimal funding and significant workloads. There was often a sense of wanting to do more, but not having either time or resources. There was also almost always a keen preparedness to work with others who might want to take up their ideas in their own discipline areas in the future. A number of ideas are put forward for consideration in the areas of supporting future projects, disseminating ideas, directing future funding, and promoting in-house support.
