Using Tangible Symbols for Communication Purposes: An Optional Step in Building the Two-Way Communication Process.

This report is intended to provide ideas to assist professionals and students in the exploration of tangible symbols for intervention purposes in working with visually capable individuals with disabilities. The first section provides an overview of tangible symbols and discusses the differences between tangible symbols and tangible objects, when and why a tangible symbols system should be used, how tangible symbols can be used, what types of tangible symbols may be used to support communication use and the understanding of messages, the most important considerations that could impact tangible symbol selection, and general considerations to guide symbol selection. The second section focuses on the usage of tangible symbols and describes how tangible symbols can be displayed for schedule/calendar, sequence, choice, and communication displays; the appearance of a tangible object schedule; a tangible symbol sequence display; a tangible choice board display; and a tangible symbol communication display. Appendices include a description of communicative functions and a checklist to use when considering programming with tangible symbols. (CR)
