Current Issues and the Veterinary Medical Library
Nault, Andre J.
Public Services Quarterly, v6 n4 p400-404 2010
Veterinary medical libraries and librarians are unique. There are now 33 veterinary colleges in North America, and in accordance with American Veterinary Medical Association accreditation, each has a library managed by an accredited librarian. Colleges with veterinary programs often maintain specialized branch libraries to support the degree, while others have their collections integrated within a larger science library. Straddling multiple disciplines, veterinary libraries struggle with an identity crisis and grapple with underdeveloped resources and weak relationships with other libraries. Like many academic libraries, veterinary libraries were affected by recent budget shortfalls, which have caused library consolidation in the worst cases. In the wake of this new reality and a changing information landscape, there is an increased need for libraries and librarians to remain relevant and justify their existence. This is an issue for all academic libraries, not just veterinary medical libraries. In this article, the author shares some of his thoughts and approaches based on five years of experience as the veterinary medical librarian at the University of Minnesota (UMN).
