Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety syndrome that can develop after exposure to a traumatic event in which harm occurred or was threatened. PTSD is often treated with group therapy. Rehabilitation counselors need to be aware of the group treatments for PTSD because counselors may be leaders of group therapy, may work with consumers who participate in group therapy, or may identify behaviors that require referral for evaluation. Rehabilitation educators may integrate didactic instruction and group activities that incorporate instruction in the identification and treatment of PTSD. Didactic instruction may integrate information regarding veterans' issues, survivor issues, PTSD and co-occurring disorders, assessment, and interventions. Group experiences may include observation and participatory activities that illustrate typical and problematic trauma responses among group members diagnosed with PTSD. (Contains 2 tables.)
