As community colleges across the country strive to improve completion rates and serve a growing number of students returned home from war, the need for programs that meet the unique needs of veterans--including job training, social acclimation, referral programs for mental health counseling, and academic tutoring, to name a few--is more pressing than at any time since the end of the Vietnam War. Thanks to the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act, commonly called the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which provides increased financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service after Sept. 10, 2001, administrators expect the number of veterans enrolled in their institutions, for job training or as a means of transfer, to grow larger still. Because veterans represent an especially vulnerable student population,this article calls for a closer look at the programs and services designed to serve them. Upon returning home veterans sometimes need help parsing information and paperwork, both of which they have in abundance so that they can make their own choices and better understand their options. This article supports the point that helping veterans determine a path is where colleges need to begin. Among other college-based services mentioned in this article, student veteran organizations stand out as pillars of successful programming. Such programs give veterans a place to turn on campus for morale and to connect with other students who understand the unique challenges they face. The goal: to help veterans land reasonable, well-paying jobs--and to enjoy a future beyond military service.
