Although it is difficult to determine the precise number of homeless children, the National Coalition for the Homeless reports that there are more than 1.3 million children lacking a permanent residence on any given night. Further, 39 percent of the homeless population was comprised of children under the age of 18 in July 2009, the most recent date for which there is data. Given the increased likelihood of students in America's schools experiencing homelessness at some point in their K-12 education, it is of primary importance that principals know what to do to help children experiencing homelessness. Not only is it the right thing to do, it is the law. According to the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, principals are obligated to ensure that homeless youths are provided with an appropriate education that is comparable to all other students' opportunities. Understanding the federal legislation requirements and knowing which resources to access can help lessen the demand felt by principals and can influence those children who find themselves homeless in ways that result in change and hope for a life of promise and opportunity. In this article, the author discusses steps for school principals in helping homeless students.
